Sh. P K Gupta

Sh. P. K. Gupta, Chancellor of Sharda University and the Founder Chairman of Sharda Group of Institutions (SGI) is a distinguished visionary and leading educationist of the country who has, within a very short span of time, put Sharda University and Sharda Group of Institutions amongst the leading technical and professional educational institutions in the country, with nearly 40,000 alumni. The University’s global outlook, with sizeable international students (over 20% of its student strength from 56+ countries), singles it out as a new generation of global University focused on science and technology, professional education, application based learning, entrepreneurship and new ventures where boundaries of subject discipline fade away and the students get exposed to a new way of learning.

Born on 9 December 1959, Sh. P.K. Gupta, after completing his studies in Agra, he set out as an entrepreneur in 1980 and started his own business of manufacturing and supplying of engineering equipments to various educational and research laboratories across the country. Soon he realized that the inadequate infrastructure and facilities in North India were hampering the development of education, especially in technical and medical fields.

The Beginning

Bringing his dream into reality, in 1995 Sh. Gupta established the Sharda Educational Trust under which sponsored an engineering college, Hindustan College of Science & Technology, Agra (1996). In 1997, he opened another college, namely, Hindustan Institute of Management & Computer Studies, Mathura. Looking at the huge response and demand for quality education, he started another college, Anand Engineering College at Agra in 1998 and Hindustan Institute of Technology and Management, Agra in 1999. In 2002, Anand College of Education and in 2006 Anand College of Pharmacy were established to diversify into other areas of higher learning. Anand College of Architecture came up later in the year 2011.

Emphasizing on Women Education

To encourage the parents belonging to rural and semi-urban areas for providing higher education to their female child he decided to grant 90% scholarship to girls whose family could not afford to pay their tuition fee. With this step, 70% admissions were given to girls in 1999. Since then, he has made it a point to give out donations and charity only for the education of girls. His mother, Smt. Sharda Gupta is the living inspiration who profusely influenced him and his vision towards life for betterment of the disadvantaged sections of the society, including women.

Expansion at Greater Noida

By 2005, the Greater Noida campus of SGI started taking shape with the setting up of the first of its kind Faculty Development Institute. Between 2005 to 2008, few more institutions were added into the Sharda Group of institutions under different disciplines like, Hindustan Institute of Technology, Hindustan Business School, Hindustan Institute of Dental Sciences, Hindustan Academy of Education Research and Training (HAERT), Hindustan Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, and Hindustan Institute of Allied Health Sciences & Research.

With a view of providing quality health-care to the masses, a Hospital named as Sharda Hospital was set up in 2006 in Greater Noida which today, with its 900 beds, is recognised as a Multi-Disciplinary Super-Speciality Hospital offering affordable Medicare to the region and the patients from abroad. The Hospital has reserved 750 beds for poor and less privileged who are being treated almost free of cost. Besides, the Hospital has setup a special corporate wing for offering super -speciality treatment to the patients belonging to the other economic strata. The hospital has served over 2 million patients who have come for treatment till now and it has performed more than 20,000 surgeries free of cost. Several hundreds of safe deliveries have been performed at this hospital to bring a smile on the face of the parents. The Hospital apart from institutional medical care also extends out-reach community health services and treatment at their door steps in several villages on a routine basis. Several international patients primarily from Africa and South Asian countries are receiving medical services at this hospital every year, and in the process getting very valuable foreign exchange earnings for the country. The hospital and all its diagnostic laboratories are accredited by NABH and NABL, respectively.

Sharda University
The crowning glory of Sharda Group of Institutions came with the establishment of Sharda University in the year 2009 as a private state university under an Act of UP State Legislature. In a short span, the University has emerged as a leading institution of higher education in Greater Noida, Delhi NCR with over 10000 students on its rolls, imparting instructions in almost all disciplines of pure and applied sciences, engineering & technology, management, humanity, architecture, design, mass communication, agriculture, education, law, nursing, pharmacy, dental and medicine. The University has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and has also been ranked in the year 2018 amongst the select band of top Universities under the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF), Govt. of India.

The University has 63 acres of compact campus with state-of-art infrastructure, including 35 lakhs sq.ft. of built-up area. The University currently hosts approx. 1500 international students drawn from 56+ countries. The 700 plus strong faculty have done fairly well on the R&D front, having produced nearly 60 Ph.D. scholars in the last 4-5 years; the current enrolment in various Ph.D. disciplines is over 200 students. The faculty has been able to attract research projects sponsored by various national and international funding agencies. The faculty has so far published over 1800 research papers, out of which 900 have been cited in Scopus with h-index of 30. The faculty has also published 16 Patents and has done 14 Design registrations. It has very recently commissioned an innovative accelerator centre, “Sharda Launch Pad” to provide industries’ a platform with requisite infrastructure to convert their innovative ideas into products for societal development. To encourage the Student start-ups, as envisaged by your good self, the University has also established a Business Incubation Centre, duly sponsored by the Government of India. For experiential enrichment of students, the University also conducts many extra-curricular activities.

Awards & Recognitions

In 2001, Sh. P.K. Gupta was bestowed with the “Udyog Ratna” award and a year later with the “Uttar Pradesh Ratna” award. He has also received the ‘Gaurav Shri’ award for entrepreneurship from the Alumni Association of Agra University, and the ‘Best Educationist’ award from The Federation of Educational Publisher in India.

Sh. Gupta is one of the founders of the Education Promotion Society for India (EPSI) which is the premier body representing the various educational institutions in the country. He has been the President of the EPSI and has been representing the various issues pertaining to the institutions of higher learning in the country and has been giving his very valuable inputs for the much needed reforms in the higher education sector at various forums including at the MHRD, UGC, AICTE, MCI and MoH&FW.

In recognition of his contribution to the higher education sector in India, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on HRD, Lok Sabha had invited him to offer his considered views/comments on the various policy Bills introduced in the Parliament by the then Human Resource Development Minister, Sh. Kapil Sibal. The Hon’ble President of India has also nominated him on the Board of Governors of the prestigious National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).
